Paleontólogo y biólogo evolucionista estadounidense. Obtuvo un Ph.D. en paleontología de la Universidad Columbia e ingresó a la facultad de la Universidad Harvard en 1967. Con Niles Eldredge (n. 1943), enunció la controvertida teoría del equilibrio saltador (1972), una revisión del darwinismo que propuso que la creación evolucionista de nuevas especies ocurre a saltos en períodos tan breves como miles de años, seguidos por largos períodos de estabilidad. Fue muy conocido como escritor divulgador de temas biológicos y evolucionistas, en especial en la revista Natural History; entre sus numerosos libros destacan The Panda's Thumb [El pulgar del panda] (1980), The Mismeasure of Man [La medida errada del hombre] (1981) y The Structure of Evolutionary Theory [La estructura de la teoría evolucionista] (2002).
